A zoo in northern Denmark is trying to mimic the natural food chain of the predators it houses — including lions and tigers — by feeding them small donated pets.
The Aalborg Zoo asked for donations of “a healthy animal that needs to be given away for various reasons” — including guinea pigs, rabbits and chickens — to be “gently euthanized” before they’re used as a food course, the facility said in a Facebook post last week.
“In zoos we have a responsibility to imitate the natural food chain of the animals — in terms of both animal welfare and professional integrity,” it added.

“[N]othing goes to waste — and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition and well-being of our predators,” the zoo wrote on Facebook.
It houses three carnivorous and dangerous species in its cages — Asiatic lions, polar bears, and the Sumatran tiger, per its website.
