Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked by a man in the center of Copenhagen, according to local reports.
Copenhagen police confirmed that one person was arrested in an incident involving the prime minister in Kultorvet, a public square in the capital city’s old town.
The prime minister’s office told the Danish state broadcaster DR that Frederiksen was “shocked” by the assault, but it’s unclear if she suffered any injuries.
Officials have not yet said what led to the incident, but it comes just days before the European Union’s parliamentary elections on Sunday.
Frederiksen has been campaigning with the Social Democrats’ EU lead candidate, Christel Schaldemose. Danish media reports the attack was not linked to a campaign event.
Fellow European leaders condemned the assault.
“An attack on a democratically elected leader is also an attack on our democracy,” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson tweeted.
Charles Michel, president of the European Council, posted that he was “outraged” by what he called a “cowardly act of aggression.”
Ahead of the EU elections, there have been several violent incidents targeting politicians.
In May, a candidate from Germany’s center-left Social Democrats was severely beaten while campaigning for a seat in the European Parliament.
Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister Robert Fico survived an assassination attempt on May 15, shocking the country and its European neighbors.
