Edan Alexander, the last living American held hostage by Hamas, was finally freed from Gaza Monday after enduring more than 19 months of unimaginable horror at the hands of the depraved terror group.

The 21-year-old Israeli-American citizen from New Jersey was emotional as he reunited with his family, tightly embracing his mother Yael and his younger brother following his 584 days in captivity.

Meanwhile, harrowing details of his time spent in Hamas’ clutches were revealed Monday — he was severely tortured and often locked in a cage, shackled at the hands and feet, deep within the terrorists’ underground tunnel network, according to the Kan public broadcaster.

Severely malnourished and weak on his feet, Edan was turned over to the Red Cross and then to Israeli forces before crossing back into the Jewish state Monday evening local time, the Israeli military said.

His long-awaited homecoming celebration kicked off before he was even en route.

Moving video released by Israel Defense Forces showed his mother, Yael Alexander, speaking to her son via phone just moments after he was freed, as overjoyed family members looked on with relief and delight.

“You are strong. You are safe. You are home. We’ll see each other soon. I love you,” Yael told her IDF staff sergeant son.

“You’re out, my dear. That’s it. I’m here waiting for you. Everything’s OK, you’re OK. You’re safe and you’re home, we’re going to meet soon. I love you, my dear,” she said, according to an IDF translation shared on social media.

Yael had received no indication her son was still alive — the last time she saw his face was when he was featured in a sickening propaganda video released by Hamas last month at the start of Passover, mocking the freedom-themed Jewish holiday.

Edan’s emotional extended family cheered and chanted as they gathered in Tel Aviv and his hometown in Tenafly, NJ, to watch his televised release, wearing shirts emblazoned with his name.

A photograph broadcast by Al Jazeera TV showed Alexander – dressed in a black Adidas t-shirt and black baseball cap — standing next to masked Hamas fighters and a Red Cross official shortly before the handover.

Alexander was expected to be taken to an Israeli defense facility for medical checks in Re’im in southern Israel where his mother was waiting for his return.

He was set to be airlifted to Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital later to undergo additional treatment.

President Trump took to Truth Social to share the happy news.

“Edan Alexander, the last living American hostage, is being sreleased [sic]. Congratulations to his wonderful parents, family, and friends!,” he wrote.

Hours before his release, Edan’s grandmother, Verda Ben Baruch, hailed Trump as a messenger of god for his efforts in securing his freedom.

“Trump made all the efforts and he is a good messenger of the Holy One, blessed be he,” she told Ynet.

“Thank God that the government cared about him.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted Alexander’s release came thanks to Israel’s military pressure in Gaza, as well as political pressure by Trump.

Hamas, meanwhile, had claimed Alexander’s release was a goodwill gesture for President Trump in a bid to try to revive talks on ending the war.

The terror group said the move followed “important talks” with the US “to which Hamas responded positively and with great flexibility.”

Fighting stopped at midday in Gaza after Netanyahu said Israel would pause its operations to allow safe passage for the hostage release.

Despite the brief pause, Netanyahu insisted the hostage transfer didn’t signal a cease-fire in the bloody war.

He added that plans for an intensified military campaign would continue.

“Israel has not committed to a cease-fire of any kind,” his office said, adding that military pressure had forced Hamas into the release. “The negotiations will continue under fire, during preparations for an intensification of the fighting.”

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz said he was “thrilled” to finally see Alexander reunite with his family and thanked the Trump administration.

“I thank the president of the United States and the American administration for their efforts and assistance in securing his release,” Katz said.

Meanwhile, Alexander’s family and officials were hopeful his release could open the way to freeing the remaining 58 hostages held in the Gaza Strip, as well the remains of the dead – including four American citizens: Husband and wife Gadi Haggai and Judi Weinstein Haggai, and soldiers Itay Chen and Omer Neutra.

“For 19 excruciating months, we have all been hoping and praying alongside Edan’s family members for his safe release. With every day that Edan has been held hostage, the Alexander family has endured unimaginable pain, uncertainty, and fear,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement.

“With Edan’s return home, their — and our — prayers have finally been answered. And as we continue praying for Edan and the Alexander family, we are also praying for the safety and well-being of every remaining hostage and innocent family in Israel, Gaza, and the entire Middle East.”

Congressman and NJ gubernatorial candidate Josh Gottheimer described Edan as “an all-American kid who could have been anyone’s son” and touted his release in a statement.

“Through it all, the Alexander family never gave up hope — and neither did we,” he said, adding that the war in Gaza “is not over until all the hostages are released and Israel’s security is guaranteed.”

Thousands of supporters had gathered in Alexander’s hometown, as well as Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square early Monday, anxiously awaiting news of his return.

Those in Tenafly were clutching yellow “welcome home” and “bring them home” signs as they watched a large video screen with a live feed from Israel.

“I haven’t slept for two nights preparing for this. This day is so important and so exciting for us. We were waiting 584 days for our community member, our beloved son of this community, to come back home,” Mali Oelsner, one of the organizers, told The Post.

“He volunteered to go to Israel and join the IDF and he got kidnapped, and now he’s coming back home.”

“As a mother, I can only think about his mom and how she feels, and how hard it must have been for her and how happy she is today – and also still sad for the sons that are still hostages,” Leeron Mosayov, of nearby Closter, said.

Shira Watermann, also of Closter, chimed in: “It’s a big relief to see him. I was a bit concerned at how he looks, but all in all he’s standing and he’s alive and he’s coming back.”

Trump called Edan’s release an important step toward the US and its mediation partners ending the protracted conflict.

“This was a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones,” he said.
