The “person of interest” last seen with University of Pittsburgh student Sudishka Konanki before she vanished in the Dominican Republic has been given a public show of support from his local community in Iowa.
“The Rock Rapids community stands behind and supports Joshua Riibe and his family,” read a statement released late Sunday by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office on behalf of “friends of the Riibe family” in Iowa.
The statement begged people to respect Riibe and his family’s privacy “during this difficult time of uncertainty,” hours before he is scheduled to be interviewed again about the missing 20-year-old he was seen hugging on camera.

“Josh has an unwavering devotion to his faith and a genuine kindness toward others,” the statement continued.
“He exemplifies the values of compassion, respect and integrity that are fundamental to our church and our community.”
“While Josh focuses his efforts to help find Sudiksha Konaki, his family at home is providing support to their loved ones in the Dominican Republic. Please help us respect those priorities,” the statement concluded.

He remains near Punta Cana where he has been joined by his parents, telling NBC News he is “trying to help” authorities.

“The ocean is a dangerous place,” he said, suggesting Konanki drowned when he was passed out on the beach.
His passport has been confiscated, authorities revealed on Saturday.
