Russia fired more than 600 drones and missiles at Ukraine overnight into Sunday — killing at least four people, including a 12-year-old girl — as Kyiv suffered one of the heaviest assaults of the war so far. 

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Administration, confirmed the deaths on Sunday, adding that 10 others were wounded across the Ukraine capital following the massive Russian barrage.

“The Russians have restarted the child death counter,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram of the first major bombardment since Moscow’s deadly assault on the capital last month that killed 21 people.

The latest attacks saw the Kremlin fire 595 drones and 48 missiles, Kyiv officials said — with Tkachenko noting the bombs were concentrated on civilian areas across the capital city and that a 12-year-old girl was among the dead.

Residential buildings, a medical facility and a kindergarten were all damaged in the onslought, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Attacks on the capital have grown so frequent in the more than three-years of war that civilians appeared no longer fazed by the late-night assault, with reporters from the Associated Press noting that residents carried on as usual in the middle of the bombardment. 

“The sky has turned black again,” one woman told the AP while waiting for a train. “It’s happening a lot.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the bombs also targeted the Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv and Odessa regions — with at least 40 people injured across the nation.  

Zaporizhzhia’s regional head, Ivan Fedorov, said three children were among the wounded after drones struck more than two dozen buildings in the oblast region’s capital. 

“This vile attack came virtually (at) the close of UN General Assembly week, and this is exactly how Russia declares its true position,” Zelensky said in a statement.

“Moscow wants to keep fighting and killing, and it deserves the toughest pressure from the world.”

The large-scale assault triggered yet another response from Poland, where fighter jets were scrambled as a “preventative” measure following repeated Russian incursions into NATO’s airspace this month. 

The Kremlin did not immediately comment on the overnight attack. 

Russia has been accused of provoking NATO with its incursions, with experts warning that Moscow was testing the defense bloc’s responses to a possible aerial assault. 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday that Moscow has no intent on attacking Europe, but it will mount a “decisive response” to any form of aggression.

Along with the attack on Ukraine, Moscow intercepted 41 drones fired across the border overnight, according to Russia’s defense ministry.
