Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky warned that Russia could be ready to deploy North Korean troops as soon as Sunday.

“According to intelligence, the first North Korean soldiers are expected to be deployed by Russia to combat zones as early as October 27–28,” Zelensky wrote on X on Friday, adding that the troops’ movement was a “clear escalation by Russia.”

The Pentagon first confirmed the presence of DPRK military personnel in Russia earlier this week.

In a press briefing on Thursday, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said Moscow’s decision to draw on North Korea “really highlights Russia’s desperation.”

“I think that shows that Putin has failed in his strategic objectives on the battlefield.”

The number of North Korean soldiers currently in Russia is estimated to be 3,000, Singh added, but Ukraine has warned that number could grow to up to 12,000.

“North Korea’s actual involvement in combat should not be met with indifference,” Zelensky wrote in his post.

“The world can clearly see Russia’s true intentions: to continue the war. A principled and strong response from global leaders is essential.”

Earlier this week, National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby warned that if North Korean troops are deployed to fight in Ukraine, they would be “fair game.”

“They’re fair targets. And the Ukrainian military will defend themselves against North Korean soldiers the same way they’re defending themselves against Russian soldiers.”
