A pro-Russian Ukrainian politician has been shot dead outside a school in Spain in an apparent assassination.
Andriy Portnov, 51, was shot by multiple assailants as he was getting into his car outside the American School of Madrid in an affluent suburb of the Spanish capital on Wednesday morning, Spanish authorities said.
Portnov, who was the deputy head of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych pro-Russian regime before his overthrow in 2014, suffered three gunshot wounds, including one to the head, according to Spanish emergency services.

Portnov’s child is believed to be enrolled in the American School — which costs about $26,000 per year — administrators said in a message to parents.
The killers fled into a wooded area close to the school following the shooting, a Spanish police source told CNN.
Cops cordoned off the area outside the elite school, which has around 1,000 students, many from the US.
No one else was injured in the shooting, and all students have been safely accounted for, the school said in a message to parents.
Portnov fled Ukraine just months after Vladimir Putin’s forces launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to an investigation by Radio Free Europe.
This came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had issued a ban on men of draft age leaving Ukraine.

REUTERSPortnov had been under US sanctions since 2021 for corruption and bribery under the Magnitsky Act, which freezes the assets of certain Russian and pro-Russian government officials accused of human rights violations.
He was previously investigated for his possible involvement in Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, but the case was later closed.
In 2014, his assets were frozen by Canada as part of a crackdown on “corrupt foreign officials” in relation to his previous work as an adviser to President Yanukovych, CNN reported.
However, he was never sanctioned by Ukraine, despite calls from many inside the country who alleged he was continuing to try and influence events back home.
In 2019, he released the personal data of several journalists who were looking into his shady dealings with Ukraine’s government, Radio Free Europe reported at the time.

In 2015, a former member of parliament with ties to Yanukovych and a Ukrainian journalist were both killed in high-profile shootings in Kyiv, CNN reported.
Around the same time, three former MPs from Yanukovych’s political party died by suspected suicide in their homes.
Spain has seen several attacks linked to the Russia-Ukraine war in the past three years, seen as linked to the large populations from both countries who live there.

A Spanish national was eventually arrested after he allegedly sent the bombs to try and influence Spain’s government to end its support for Ukraine.
Last year, a Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine by dramatically flying his helicopter across the border was found dead after being shot in the parking garage of an apartment building in the resort city of Alicante.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and President Zelensky’s office have not commented on Portnov’s death.
