A lion helped California authorities nab a trespasser who dared enter her lair this week, slowing the moron down with a bite to his big toe, according to a report.
Julio Mendez, 38, climbed his way into the Chaffee Zoo in Central Fresno just after 11 p.m. Wednesday — but it wasn’t long before he was detected, Lt. Jennifer Horsford of the Fresno Police Department told ABC 30 Action News.
“He did have to jump over a fence that has a no trespassing sign and had to climb over the barbed wire that was on top of it to actually get into the zoo itself,” Horsford told the station.
Zoo security soon spotted him walked through the African Adventure area — so he ran away and attempted to climb an 18-foot high mesh to escape, police told the outlet.
Suddenly, a female lion in the exhibit stood up on her back feet and munched on the intruder’s left big toe, according to the report.
“They are incredibly strong, and they are dangerous,” Zoo Director Scott Barton told the outlet. “They have both of course claws and massive canine teeth, and so this person got very lucky about the injuries they received.”
Two female lions were inside the exhibit, but it wasn’t clear which bit Mendez.
Both were checked out by a veterinarian, because Mendez was believed to be under the influence of drugs, cops told the station.
Security staff is reviewing footage from 50 different cameras to more closely examine the zoo’s security procedures, Barton told the outlet.
“We have a very professional and well-trained team and this was brought about by human behavior, not by animal behavior,” he added.
Police discovered drug paraphernalia on Mendez and told the station that he will be cited for trespassing.
