Republican Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming announced he will resign at the end of his term.

Saturday’s statement from the 22-year senator puts his seat into play in the traditionally red state.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is among the possible candidates for the role, the Washington Post noted.

“I have much to get done in the next year and a half,” Enzi was quoted as saying in the Casper Star-Tribune. “I want to focus on budget reform. I don’t want to be burdened by the distractions of another campaign. After this year, I’ll find other ways to serve.”
