A zebra that busted out of its Texas ranch has tragically died after it was airlifted home following a stunning two-hour police chase, local authorities said.
Dramatic footage shows the animal swinging wildly from a harness attached to a helicopter after cops tranquilized it near San Antonio on Wednesday night.
“In the hours since the incident was resolved, NBPD was saddened to hear that the zebra had died sometime after it was returned to its owners,” an update on the New Braunfels Police Department website read.
The zebra and a mate escaped their pens and swam across a river surrounding the property in the New Braunfels area on Wednesday afternoon, local officials said.
One zebra stayed in the immediate area, while the other, more daring, animal was spotted galloping through the town around 4:45 p.m.
Police dashcam footage showed cops pursuing the zebra as it trotted down a local street before a helicopter crew arrived and tranquilized it.
The wayward animal was airlifted into a truck and trailer before being taken home, where it mysteriously died.
The other zebra didn’t wander too far off the ranch and was returned Wednesday night, cops said. That zebra was also found dead on the property Thursday morning, Valley News reported.
