Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded “just punishment” against Russia for its invasion of his country as he bashed the Kremlin as the only entity that wants war while he spoke during the United Nations General Assembly meeting.
Zelensky’s nearly 25-minute remarks to world leaders over video on Wednesday ripped into Russia for “trying to steal” Ukrainian territory and urged other countries to stand against the Moscow’s “illegal war.”
“I thank you that we are united in our striving to restore peace and to guarantee peace for any nation that has become a victim of the armed aggression,” Zelensky said. “A crime has been committed against Ukraine and we demand just punishment.
“The crime was committed against our state borders, the crime was committed against the lives of our people, the crime was committed against the dignity against our women and men.”
He said Russia is the only country that has rejected peace.
“Ukraine wants peace, Europe wants peace, the world wants peace,” he said. “And we have seen who is the only one who wants war. There is only one entity among all UN member-states who would say now if he could interrupt my speech that he’s happy with this war. With his war.
“But we will not let this entity prevail over us.”
Zelensky told UN members that Russia should be punished for their invasion of Ukraine.
APZelensky’s wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska watched the speech while surrounded by the Ukrainian delegation inside UN headquarters in New York City.
The highly anticipated speech came hours after Putin moved to mobilize reservists and vowed to use every means necessary, an apparent reference to nuclear weapons, to protect Russia.
But Zelensky appeared undeterred by the threats and said Ukraine would ultimately prevail.
He called on Russia to lose their veto power on the UN Security Council, arguing Moscow should be isolated, “at least until aggression stops.” Russia is one of five permanent UN Security Council members.
Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska arrives prior to an address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. APZelensky said during his presidency Ukraine held countless peace talks before Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion. He said Russia and its people should be shunned by other countries to signal to other possible aggressors “that they must value peace or be brought to responsibility by the world.”
Zelensky, who took office in 2019, listed several preconditions that could lead to peace and improve global order as he pleaded for more weapons and financial support from other countries to take on Russian forces.
He dismissed neutrality as a viable option.
“Those who speak of neutrality, when human values and peace are under attack, mean something else.”
Zelensky received a standing ovation after the speech, though the Russian delegation remained silent and seated.
